toward the edge of town, atop a cliff, where it seems to be in danger of falling off at any moment. the inside was recently renovated, and it is beautiful, with soft jazz playing all through out the first floor, the only exceptions being the ballroom and cathedral. stepping into the hotel feels as though you are stepping back through time, into the hey day of paulina port. in all, there are four floors in the hotel.
the outside of the hotel is decrepit, and it looks as though no one has resided in it for years.
each of the 72 rooms are identical. they are suites and comfortably fit the one person they are assigned to, but any guests who choose to join you in your room would be comfortably accommodated as well. the sitting area, bedroom, bathroom and kitchen always seem to be immaculate. as far as anyone knows, there is no cleaning staff employed at paulina hotel, however. the balcony has chairs for two, a table, and the only ash tray in the hotel room.
the hallways are always vacant, strangely. leaving the room with someone else doesn't affect this. you'll both find yourself alone in the hallways, no matter what.
the lobby of the hotel has ritz written all over it. there is a concierge desk, but there is no one ever at it. in fact, the chair looks as though it's never been sat in. yet, if you call the front desk, a cool female voice you've never heard before will answer, and fulfill your requests to the t. you will never come to know this woman, or hear her voice anywhere else in your lifetime.
in addition to the lobby, the first floor also has several twenty four hour convenience stores. in the same vein as the concierge desk, no one is ever at any of the registers, but the stores are always well stocked. a note on the counter reminds guests that anything taken from the convenience stores is added to their tab. how do they know what you've taken though, and what exactly is already on your tab?
the ballroom, too, is located on the first floor. it is dusty, and has not been used in some time. it is, however, well-lit, and it is clear that it was once used for marvelous parties thrown by the rich and famous. the only thing that seems to be new is the ceiling, which features a sprawling rendition of hans memling's the last judgement, in all its glory.
though it is tucked away, well hidden, a beautiful sign indications the location of the cathedral. however, the cathedral is locked tight, and you need permission to enter it. the sign also indicates that you need special permission from the Dorm Parents to use the cathedral. it seems like a bit too much precaution to be taking just for a place to pray on vacation.
